Hidden at the foot of the Herman beaches on the Darlingford Moraine, Birch Ski Area is one of Manitoba’s best-kept outdoor recreation secrets. Located approximately 35 km southwest of Carman, this volunteer-run ski area features 10 km of groomed cross-country ski trails that wind in and out of scenic gullies and valleys.
The terrain supports intermediate, advanced, and expert skiers, with grooming for both classic and skate skiing. The natural terrain provides a challenging and picturesque setting, making it a local skier’s favorite. Due to the lack of chairlifts, we recommend skis only within Birch Ski Area.
Other than winter activities, Birch Ski Area also transforms into a spot for hiking and mountain biking during the summer. It has hosted numerous events, including the 1999 Pan Am Games XC event and the 2017 Canada Summer Games XC event, which testifies to its flexibility and appeal to those who enjoy spending time outdoors.
Amenities are sparse, with no rentals or meals on site, but community and a commitment to outdoor sports make Birch Ski Area a destination for anyone seeking a raw and authentic experience. Visitors are encouraged to support the trails through membership, donation, or by simply getting out and enjoying the nature of the area.
